Match-On-Card (MOC) is a secure fingerprint authentication technology that consists of registering fingerprints (or their template) on a smart card or a USB keys secure memory. Match-on-card technology eliminates the possibility of revealing private fingerprint data on the network. Fingerprint template is stored within a smart card and fingerprint matching is performed in the smart card itself. MOC works by performing comparison and decision making on an integrated circuit (IC) card or smart card where the biometric reference data is retained on-card to enhance security and privacy. To perform enrollment, the biometric interface device captures the biometric presentation of the user to create the biometric template. Then, the biometric template and user’s information are uploaded to the card’s secure storage. To perform on-card matching, the biometric interface device captures the biometric presentation and creates a biometric template. The created biometric template is then uploaded to the card for verification. The verification process shall be executed on-card instead of sending the enrolled template out of the card for verification. With this technique, the smart card must be a microcontroller-based device and be capable of computing the one-to-one comparison. Both smart cards and smart card readers are available that support match-on-card. An alternative method to Match-On-Card is Match-off-card or Match-on-Terminal.
