SCM SCR3310 Smart Card Reader Overview
The SCR3310 continues the line of Identive's (formally SCM Microsystems) market-leading smart card readers based on the STC II smart card interface chip. The smart card reader is small and ergonomic USB smart card readers, with backside mounting holes. The card reader is ISO7816 compliant, and works with all major ISO7816 smart card in ID-1 (CR80) format. The smart card reader also allows in-field upgradeable firmware.
The SCR3310 smart card reader supports multiple security applications including PKI, digital signature and personal identification, all in a compact, mobile device. The SCR3310v2.0 card reader includes support for USB and all relevant security standards; the interface is CCID and PC/SC as well as EMV2000 Level 1 compliant. The EMV certification recommends the reader be used for applications with banking transaction or credit card payment.

- API (Application Programming Interface)
- A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol. APIs are implemented by writing function calls in the program, which provide the linkage to the required subroutine for execution. Thus, an API implies that a driver or program module is available in the computer to perform the operation or that software must be linked into the existing program to perform the tasks.
- CAC (Common Access Card)
- A smart card about the size of a credit card, is the standard identification for active duty uniformed service personnel, Selected Reserve, DoD civilian employees, and eligible contractor personnel. It is also the principal card used to enable physical access to buildings and controlled spaces, and it provides access to DoD computer networks and systems.
- CCID (Chip Card Interface Device)
- The standardized communication protocols by which a USB host interacts with a USB smart card reader interacts with a smart card (with contacts, as specified in ISO/IEC 7816). These devices have been assigned the USB class number 0x0B. Generic CCID USB Smart Card Reader are readily available and very much compatible with all SKUs often associated for Windows based Operating Systems such as Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.
- EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa, a global standard for inter-operation of integrated circuit cards and IC card capable point of sale terminals and automated teller machines, for authenticating credit and debit card transactions.
- ID-1 (CR80)
- An international standard that defines the physical characteristics for identification cards and is reference by the ISO 7810 (Identification Cards-Physical Characteristics) document. According to this document the ID-1 (CR80) card has the following dimensions: 3.370 inches (85.60 mm) wide and 2.125 inches (53.98 mm) high. The thickness is 0.030 inches.
- Founded in 1946, ISO is an international organization composed of national standards bodies from over 75 countries. For example, ANSI (American National Standards Institute) is a member of ISO. ISO has defined a number of important computer standards, the most significant of which is perhaps OSI (Open Systems Interconnection), a standardized architecture for designing networks.
- ISO/IEC 7810
- The standard specifies the physical characteristics of identification cards including card material, construction, characteristics and nominal dimensions for three sizes of cards (ID-1, ID-2 and ID-3). It is the ID-1 card that forms the basis of ISO 7816-1.
- ISO/IEC 7816
The standardization of physical characteristics, dimensions and location of contacts, electrical interface and transmission protocols, organization, security and commands for interchange of a smart card. It was created in 1987, updated in 1998, amended in 2003.

- Memory Smart Cards
- Though often referred to as smart cards, memory cards are typically much less expensive and much less functional than microprocessor cards. They contain EEPROM and ROM memory, as well as some address and security logic. In the simplest designs, logic exists to prevent writing and erasing of the data. More complex designs allow for memory read access to be restricted. Typical memory card applications are pre-paid telephone cards and health insurance cards.
- Microprocessor Smart Cards
- A smart card that has a microprocessor that includes components of this type of architecture including a CPU, RAM, ROM, and EEPROM. The operating system is typically stored in ROM, the CPU uses RAM as its working memory, and most of the data is stored in EEPROM. A rule of thumb for smartcard silicon is that RAM requires four times as much space as EEPROM, which in turn requires four times as much space as ROM.
- OS (Operating System or COS)
- The OS is the hardware-specific firmware that provides basic functionality as secure access to on-card storage, authentication and encryption. Only a few cards allow writing programs that are loaded onto the smart card - just like programs on a computer.
- PC/SC (Personal Computer/Smart Card)
- The interoperability specification for ICCs and Personal Computer Systems (PC/SC) has been developed to ease the introduction of smart cards into the world of PCs. The advantage of PC/SC is that applications do not have to acknowledge the details corresponding to the smart card reader when communicating with the smart card. This application can function with any reader that complies with the PC/SC standard. The PC/SC specifications are based on the ISO 7816 standards and are compatible with both the EMV and GSM specifications. There is broad industry support for the specifications and a strong desire to move them toward becoming independent standards in the future.
- PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)
- An organization consisting of some 500 companies that has developed a standard for small, credit card-sized devices, called PC Cards. Originally designed for adding memory to portable computers, the PCMCIA standard has been expanded several times and is now suitable for many types of devices. There are in fact three types of PCMCIA cards. All three have the same rectangular size (85.6 by 54 millimeters), but different widths. Type II cards can be up to 5.5 mm thick. These cards are often used for modem and fax modem cards.
- PKI (Public Key Infrastructure)
- A system of digital certificates, Certificate Authorities, and other registration authorities that verify and authenticate the validity of each party involved in an Internet transaction. PKIs are currently evolving and there is no single PKI or even a single agreed-upon standard for setting up a PKI. However, nearly everyone agrees that reliable PKIs are necessary before electronic commerce can become widespread.
- An open-source Unix-like operating system that combines OpenSolaris technology with Linux KVM virtualization. Its core kernel contributed to illumos project. It features four technologies, ZFS, DTrace, Zones and KVM. SmartOS is designed to be particularly suitable for building clouds and generating appliances.
- SDK (Software Development Kit)
- A collection of development tools used for programmers to develop applications for a smart card use and includes API's.
- UID (Unique Identification Number)
A number which is guaranteed to be unique among all identifiers used in a smart card for a specific purpose. There are three main types of unique identifiers, each corresponding to a different generation strategy:
- Serial numbers, assigned incrementally
- Random numbers, selected from a number space much larger than the maximum (or expected) number of objects to be identified. Although not really unique, some identifiers of this type may be appropriate for identifying objects in many practical applications and are, with abuse of language, still referred to as “unique”
- A character-level transmission protocol, defined in ISO/IEC 7816-3. T=0 requires 2 request/response pairs per command (send command and get response saying got command, then a command to get the response and then the actual response).
- A block-level transmission protocol, defined in ISO/IEC 7816-3. T=1 is newer than T=0. The block-oriented T=1 protocol is a half-duplex protocol and works with error detection (EDC) at the end of block.
