A hardware-independent, object-oriented programming language developed by the Sun Microsystems (now Oracle), which is widely used on the Internet. Java source code is translated by a compiler into standardized bytecode, which is then usually interpreted by a virtual machine based on the target hardware (Intel, Motorola, etc.) and operating system (Windows, MacOS, Unix, etc.) platforms. There are also microprocessors (such as picoJava) that can directly execute Java bytecode.
