2006-03-27 — France-based smart card maker Axalto will provide microchips for use in the Czech Republic’s new electronic passport program and will begin shipping the chips “in a couple of weeks,” an Axalto spokesperson tells Card Technology sister publication CardLine Europe. According to the spokesperson, Axalto will deliver the chips to Trüb AG, the Swiss company that is producing the polycarbonate data page on which the smart chips will be embedded. According to Axalto, the Czech Republic plans to issue 200,000 of the new passports by the end of this year, with a total of 3 million documents to be issued by 2010. The Axalto spokesperson says that the company is also producing microchips for French electronic passports, a contract for which the delivery deadline is the end of April, as well as for Russia and Portugal.
