July 14, 1998 – NEC Corporation (NEC) has signed a licensing agreement with Sun Microsystems for the ‘Java Card™’ IC card programming language, to further strengthen its IC card-related semiconductor and system solution businesses.
Java Card enables Java™-based IC card applications to be written simply and quickly, and for multiple applications to be easily mounted on IC cards. These significant advantages that JavaCard offers, have lead to expectations of it becoming the standard next-generation IC card software language.
NEC and Sun Microsystems signed a license agreement for the Java Application Environment in April 1996, and have since cooperated closely, establishing a strong relationship through systems construction and development of industrial-use network computers. As a result, NEC has gained significant technological expertise with the Java programming language.

This decision supports if necessary the irrevocable position of Java Card as a world-wide standard. I am sure that NEC will be one of the major contributors in the Java Card Forum and I am happy to welcome them in the next session of the Forum held in Barcelona” said Christian Goire, President of the Java Card Forum and Director, Advanced Projects at Bull.
In addition to the licensing agreement announced today for the JavaCard language, NEC has also joined the ‘JavaCard Forum’ of organizations developing JavaCard and which is working towards standardizing technical specifications for the IC card field.
This licensing agreement represents great potential for NEC to further develop its semiconductor and card reader/writer products in the IC card field. In addition to these areas of development, NEC is also aiming to advance next-generation application software, development of IC card applications and IC card systems.
