Student ID

Student ID Card is the unique number assigned to all full-time and part-time students at a post-secondary institution. All students receive an identification card, with their name, ID number and a photo of themselves displayed. This ID is randomly generated upon applying to the university or college.

A student ID’s can be a simple plastic card with no technology, or it can be a more secure smart card that stores identity data in chip. By using a smart card, a student ID can provide the ability for multi-application use such as library card, stored value (SVC) to make purchases from a cafeteria or vending machines, physical access control (PACS) and logical access for school networks.

Student identification refers to the random identifier associated with a student’s academic record. It will not transfer with students should they switch institutions. This number helps institutions track, monitor and organize student records more efficiently. This identifier will often be used in place of personal information such as name.
