Datastrip’s DSVII biometric handheld device being demonstrated at the ASIS 2005

All-in-One ID Card/Biometric Reader Helps Increase Security for Companies, Schools, Emergency Responders, Government Programs.

Orlando, FL (ASIS International, Booth 360, September 12, 2005) — Datastrip’s DSVII family of biometric handheld identification terminals is being used to power a wide variety of new mobile identify verification applications being demonstrated at the ASIS 2005 conference that opens today in Orlando. The company’s wireless ID card/biometric readers will showcase software applications by at least seven card, access control and biometric providers that make it possible to check identities in building corridors, parking lots, buses, or any other location without a physical door structure for setting up a traditional security checkpoint.

“Mobile identity verification is gaining momentum because it enables security managers to significantly broaden the safety net. They are no longer limited to checking identities at doorways and other fixed locations,” said Melinda Morris, Partner Sales Manager for Datastrip, exhibiting at booth 360 at ASIS. “The number of biometric and card integration providers that are showing mobile applications at ASIS this year clearly demonstrates the demand for more flexible security solutions.”

Vendors that will be demonstrating mobile ID systems with the Datastrip DSVII terminals selected the units because of their wide range of features, support for multiple biometric technologies and communication protocols, and ability to handle the processing needs of complex applications. The list includes:

• Johnson Controls, Inc. and SAFLINK Corporation (Booth #4142): The Datastrip DSVII-SC is providing on-the-spot employee identity verification for a biometric-based smart card access control system using SAFLINK technologies supported by JCI. Datastrip’s unit will help users of the joint solution strengthen physical security by enabling identities to be validated anywhere from hallways to vehicle-side at company gates and even non-traditional locations such as dockside at seaports.

• Laminex (Booth #2170): The Datastrip terminal is the hardware component of Laminex’s new DuraSMART Verifier II mobile tracking solution, a shrink-wrapped system that permits rapid deployment of biometric smart cards for use in remote or temporary environments such as emergency and crime scenes, conferences, military sites, and school field trips or athletic events. It utilizes Laminex’s DuraSMART contactless smart cards with 1:1 matching of information stored in the DSVII’s on-board memory, eliminating the need for wireless connectivity to a back-end database.

• Synercard (Booth #3260): Datastrip DSVII units are being showcased as part of an end-to-end enterprise solution combining physical, logical and mobile access control. Powered by Synercard’s Asure ID Exchange, the system enables an employee to utilize a single contactless smart card equipped with a Bioscrypt-based fingerprint template to open a door, logon to a computer, and provide mobile identity verification anywhere on the organization’s premises.

• Bioscrypt (Booth #557): In addition to the combined Bioscrypt / Synercard / Datastrip solution mentioned above, Bioscrypt is using Datastrip’s handheld terminals in conjunction with its own fixed fingerprint-based physical access control equipment to enable enterprises to obtain fixed and mobile biometric identification hardware from a single source. This new offering is an extension of a partnership announced several months ago under which Datastrip added support for the Bioscrypt Core fingerprint matching algorithm to its DSVII family of readers.

• Datacard Group (Booth #1019): The Datastrip DSVII-SC is being used to demo a card-based credentialing system designed for applications ranging from federal government programs to emergency responders and mobile passport processing.

• Cogent Systems (Booth #5161): Datastrip’s handheld terminals are bringing mobile identity verification capabilities to Cogent solutions enabling 1:1 fingerprint matching from contactless smart cards. Cogent algorithms and software have been ported to the DSVII family, enabling live fingerprints scanned with the Datastrip unit’s fingerprint sensor to be compared to Cogent-based biometric templates on the go. Key applications are U.S.-sponsored identification programs here and abroad.

About the Datastrip DSVII Series

The Datastrip DSVII family of handheld identification terminals consists of a series of lightweight smart card/biometric readers. Each model integrates a card reader, a 500 dpi fingerprint sensor for matching a live fingerprint to a stored biometric template, and a large color transflective 240 x 320 pixel touchscreen display that is readable in direct sunlight or low-light conditions.

The terminals can read contact and contactless smart cards, proximity cards, bar codes, passports and/or OCR-B data depending on the model. They support fingerprint algorithms from Cogent Systems, NEC, Motorola’s Printrak, Identix and Bioscrypt, and they can retrieve data from on-board memory or a back-end database via wireless 802.11 or Bluetooth technology. The units run on the Windows CE.NET operating system for easy development of custom applications, and utilize a SH4 RISC processor that supports fast biometric matching as well as more complex applications.
